Starting this August 15th to August 23rd, the annual Rogers Cup will be presented at York University’s Rexall Centre. This year, the women’s tournament will be held in Toronto (men’s and women’s tournaments alternate each year) and as of this printing, the Williams sisters, Maria Sharapova and last year’s defending champ and world #1 ranked player Dinara Safina will be joining us.
The total prize money for the tournament is US$2-million, with the champion winning US$350,000. What’s interesting about this year’s tournament is that a special Opening Night program is scheduled for Monday, August 17 (qualifying rounds start on the 15th, 1st round on the 17th) when former greats Martina Navratilova and Monica Seles join Serena Williams and rising Canadian star Aleksandra Wozniak in a special doubles exhibition.
