So You Like it Wet & Fast? WAKESTOCK World Series 10th Anniversary Festival / Toronto Islands / July 26th to the 29th, 2007

    wakeboarding

    Wake’board’ing
    - The sport of riding a short, very broad water ski in the manner of a surfboard while being towed by a motorboat.

Why the formal definition? Because surely I can’t be the only one who had no idea what wakeboarding was. Of course unlike me you don’t have to formally announce your degree of cluelessness to the world, but rather can now read this in proud anonymity and comfort while becoming fully aware as well. See, I took one for the team today. I really do care! And I feel pretty strongly that like myself, once you read more about this fast approaching festival and it’s cornucopia of events, you’re going to care very much about making a possible plan to check it out. And in the category of excellent summer date places, WAKESTOCK clearly has its need-for-wet-speed eyes on the prize.

It may seem at first glance that people are merely flying around on boards across the water, (a.k.a. what I used to think), but trust me they have formed and packed this event like a perfectly layered trifle and one that is indeed worthy of the ‘Stock’. We are talking about all kinds of boarding, an insane array of live bands and music (over 25 to be precise), contests, food, shopping, the infamous bud light beer garden and have I even mentioned the pre and after parties? No? Alright, note to self – mention the pre and after parties. The heart and soul of this is of course centered around the WAKESTOCK WWA World Series Pro Events along with the WS Amateur Wakeboarding Championship which in a nutshell is a compilation of wakeboarding events all across Long Pond, Centre Island. It’s like the Indy on water and from what I hear was designed with the spectator in mind, meaning views are supposedly incredible from start to finish no matter where you’re watching from. The sponsors involved in this event are also amazingly bountiful including Bud Light, Telus, Much Music, Milk, Malibu Boat Dealers, 102.5 The Edge, Eye Weekly, Toronto Star and believe it or not there is still more. There’s actually so much going on that I seriously recommend going to the official site in order to get even more details on all the action. There’s only so much one guy can do after all!

Now, what makes this a great contender for a creative date place? (Or as always, to possibly meet somebody) That would quite simply be its vast array of things to do and see along with the actual spirit of the event. Not to mention, the venue is fantastic. If you’ve been to Centre Island before then you know it’s quite the little Toronto Mecca. And while it’s no Hampton’s it gets the job done with plenty of fresh air and room to explore. I don’t get there nearly enough in the summer which is why I love that they’ve moved this 10th Anniversary event to the Islands. In fact I had to look twice at pictures of previous year’s debauchery because at quick glance it felt like I was looking at highlights of an MTV Spring Break. While it may no longer be spring, I don’t think anyone would argue that we can always use a break, especially with the one currently putting that extra sparkle in the eyes. And while it’s highly unlikely you’d ever catch me competing in an actual wakeboarding competition, I am however still thinking that watching all this action may entice me to at least try it out sometime. Truth be told I was once able to actually get up on water-ski’s…and yes even a few seconds count!

Seriously check out the official website @ www.wakestock.com for full breakdowns of all the party & event schedules plus everything you need to know to make it happen.
You can also purchase tickets pursuant to specific days & events of interest or if you want to make a serious bender weekend out of it go the route of a full Festival 4-Day Pass.
