    To My Readers,

    Olga

Hello, everyone! My name is Olga Andriyevska, and I write for Love in Toronto about interesting dating ideas. Currently, I am in a Professional Writing program at university, and hope to later end up in the publishing business.

Having lived in Toronto for 7years now, I spent most of these years living around the neighbourhood of Yonge and Eglinton. I have taken on the spirit of the business and entertainment district, which will be reflected in most of my articles. I also have a taste for the arts; I appreciate the performing arts just as much as galleries and exhibitions. Just like my friend and colleague, Stephanie Delfina, I am also a strong believer that a relationship should not be defined by the amount of money put into it. There are plenty of interesting and romantic places to have a date at in the city of Toronto that do not cost a fortune, and I am on a mission to find the best ones.

Since I am only 19 years of age, I am still exploring the works of dating. I believe that a good relationship constitutes of good communication, compromise, and proper advice from someone outside of the relationship.  I am afraid that might sound like a cliché, but that formula has worked great for me. An amazing relationship, however, on top of the above-said, also includes variety. Variety makes almost anything exciting. Although I have my own favourite places to go to and favourite things to do on a date, throwing in some new things into the mix once in a while makes a big difference. From my own experience and from the experience of many of my close friends, it can be rather hard to find new and exciting locations to visit on a date. That is why I believe my writing for Love in Toronto can make an important difference in the livelihood of someone’s relationship.

Also, I am currently working on a project with Stephanie Delfina. We are in the process of creating a pilot of our internet-based talk show, She Said She Said. The show is about anything that has to do with young people, like us, dating in the city of Toronto. Although it could be classified as an advice show, we are planning to make it light and humorous. So stand by until we launch it! In the meantime, enjoy our postings!

    Sweet, Sweet Place Antosha

    March 10th, 2009

    post2
I had the pleasure of sitting down for a coffee and a slice of cake with Anton Yakobov, a proud owner of Antosha Bakery and Café. Known well among almost all Russian Torontonians with sweet teeth, this modest little café hidden in the Bathurst-Cedarcroft Plaza has more to offer than just darn good cake.

Twelve years ago, Anton had a humble dream of bringing something new to the area – authentic European and Russian cakes and pastries. With the impressive experience of nineteen years in the industry – in USSR as well as Israel – Anton was set to make his dream come true. Now, twelve years later, Antosha is known not only locally, but all over Toronto.

Antosha offers eighteen elaborate cakes. Any cake can either be purchased as a whole, or as individual slices. Besides those, there are plenty of Danishes, pies, cookies and cream pastries. The cakes’ recipes originate in Germany, Italy, France, and Russia – all slightly altered by the immensely experienced and talented chef and owner. “What makes my bakery unique among most other,” says Anton, “is the quality and variety of ingredients used. I use four natural creams – French, whipping, butter, and sour creams – as well as many kinds of dough. Nothing is made from powder or concentrate; everything is fresh and top quality – that is what makes my baked goods so delicious.” Anyone with a sweet tooth would be silly to argue with that.

Anton is strongly passionate for his baked goods just as much as creating a pleasant atmosphere and delivering the best customer service.  The cleverly decorated space and a flat screen TV make for a relaxing visit, while the slightly more intimate booths and the dimmed lights in the evenings make for a great romantic setting. As for the customer service – Anton is a strong believer in making sure every customer leaves satisfied. Should anyone feel discontented, he is always available to come to the front to speak to the customer in person. Although, personally, I always found the staff very accommodating, even when they are most busy.

And quite notably, the prices are miniscule compared to the quality of the produce. Cakes are around $25 each, and the individual cake pieces are only $2.80. A couple can enjoy a sweet date for only $10-12 for both. So come down to Antosha to drink some good espresso, watch some Russian video clips, enjoy the quiet atmosphere, and – most importantly – indulge in some of the tastiest European and Russian baked goods.

also caters to special events and offers custom designed cakes

The store is located at 5986 Bathurst St, the Bathurst-Cedarcroft Plaza and is open 9am – 10pm every day.

    Supreme Sushi Supreme

    March 5th, 2009

With a colossal amount of sushi places sprawled across our fine city of Toronto, how does one really choose which one to go to? Choosing a good place simply by the flashiest sign up front is just impractical – it is a hit-and-miss system. So how did I find my favourite sushi spot, Sushi Supreme? I used to live across the street from it.

Even though I have long moved away from the area, I still take an hour’s trip down to just North of Yonge and Davisville to enjoy a delicious meal at a cozy restaurant. There is a special charm to Sushi Supreme that I have not yet seen replicated in any other restaurant I have been to – sushi o

r not. The exposed-brick walls are uniquely covered in ethnic knickknacks and gorgeous art works. A wooden staircase leads to a second floor – a more secluded sitting area. It is up on the second floor where I like to perch myself at with a pair of chopsticks in my hand.

There is a reason there are plenty of “Best OF” awards hanging on the walls behind the cooks. The customer service is superb – I never go low on my tea or wait too long for my food to be prepared. Also, the restaurant is always in top shape. Does not sound cheap? Nonsense – I find the prices at Sushi Supreme exceptionally reasonable, especially when compared to the quality of food served.

I find this restaurant so supreme; I’ve frequented it hundreds of times, and even spent my last Birthday there. And I do not think it is just old habits – Sushi Supreme is absolutely worth checking out.

Sushi Supreme is located at 1995 Yonge Street.

    Ginger, Spice, and Everything Nice

    February 7th, 2009

Ginger foodNot every date needs to be utterly romantic. Quite often a couple needs a simple and comfortable place to be in. But even a simple and comfortable date can be memorable and awe-striking, just like one of my favourite casual restaurants – Ginger.
Ginger has few locations, but my most preferred one of all is at Church and Wellesley.  Located in one of the prettiest neighbourhoods in Toronto, Ginger is a sight to look at. It is well-decorated, with vibrant walls and bright colours. It also has massive windows, under which you would always find me – especially in the summer when it is a true delight to feel the warm breeze as well as see the exceptionally decorated vicinity.
But it is not just the view I come to see at Ginger – it is also my favourite eatery to come to to get amazing ethnic food for a relatively low price. The Asian cuisine is exceptional, especially when compared to the low prices. A hefty-sized meal can cost as low as $8 per plate, and the variety upholds with the quality. The food at Ginger is always interesting and delicious – there is never a bland bite, even for the most common dishes like chicken shish kabobs and u-don noodles, which are my favourite at Ginger.
The reason I call Ginger a casual restaurant is because it is somewhat cafeteria-style. Although your food is brought to your table, you are not bothered with endless visits from the waiter. The customer service there is a precious mix of getting what you need without being disturbed every five minutes. For that reason I find this restaurant a great place not only to relax, but also be able to have a long and uninterrupted conversation with the person I came with.
Ginger is a must-go-to place for anyone living in Toronto. I frequent there so often that should you go to the Church and Wellesley location, you’re bound to run into me eventually.
Ginger is located at 546 Church St.

Madeleines Cherry Pie And Ice Cream Shop – Have A Sweet Valentine’s Day

    January 14th, 2009

    Madeleines

As Valentine’s Day is soon to arrive, all genius of one’s imagination should be driven in one direction – thinking of the most romantic experience to have with a loved one. A great spot to have an amazing dreamy date is at Madeleines Cherry Pie and Ice Cream Shop. It is definitely sweet, it is absolutely affordable, and it is undeniably romantic.

Even though a coffee date is thought of somewhat unoriginal, this date will be nothing but that. Unlike most of the popular coffee or tea shop, this particular store has a superb variety of unique and delicious pastries, pies, ice creams, and beverages. There is something to please anyone’s sweet tooth.

Although so absolutely enjoyable, a date at Madeleines is affordable for anyone. Two hot beverages and two sundaes or some pastries would cost $10-$15, which is definitely cheap compared to the experience you’re bound to have. Also, the shop offers many adorable and affordable gifts, making the Valentine Day gift shopping that much easier.

Not only do the people at Madeleines offer a cozy ambiance and outstanding customer service, but they also have gone beyond themselves to create a truly unique atmosphere. The entire shop is covered in unique vintage tools that have anything to do with baking and caking, as well as beautiful displays of china and Madeleines own cake masterpieces. And most importantly, this place is one of the most romantic locations I have ever been to. There is always a serene spot available – either inside or on the patio outside in the summer time. And Cupid himself on a sugar-hype zooms around the place with golden arrows ready to pierce the hearts of anyone who walks through the front doors.

Madeleines Cherry Pie and Ice Cream Shop is located at 1087 Bathurst Street (just blocks north of Bathurst Station).

High Park in a High-Rise Jungle of a City

    December 30th, 2008

High ParkA walk in a park can be considered a clichéd idea for a date, but I still believe there is no better way to get to know someone you have recently met or spend some quality time with your old hubby in a relaxed environment. Living in Toronto, many people forget what it is like to walk on a patch of grass larger than three square meters. For such people, a trip to the park is not only romantic, but also therapeutic. Take High Park, for example – located just south of High Park station, it is an island of unmolested nature in the midst of an urban city.
Although High Park has some inviting private trails a couple could stroll along, it also has many features a regular local parkette could only dream of.  For example, High Park has a beautiful pond, along which runs a walkway – partially in the shadows of trees, partially out in the open, encrusted with seating areas open to charming views. For those more active, High Park has tennis courts, a skating rink, baseballs diamonds, and soccer fields. And if that does not tickle your fancy, you can always make a stop at the café, or enjoy a home-made snack at one of the many picnic areas located all over the park. For those unable to find a babysitter, High Park has few playgrounds and a small zoo that would keep your child content while you your spend time with your lovey-dovey.
This park offers magnificent views during any one of the four seasons, and there is always something to do. It is conveniently located next to the High Park subway station, and the size of it allows for a more private getaway in the urban jungle of Toronto.
For more information, visit the official webpage of the park,

    Holiday Potluck

    December 23rd, 2008

The holiday season is a time to reunite with family and friends that the entire year has kept away. A good way to catch up on the missed news is over dinner and wine. One of my favourite ways to do this is by organizing a potluck for friends with my partner. This is also a great opportunity to introduce my friends to my significant other, if I have not yet done so. If I have, it is still a whole lot of fun.

The holidays are a time to fill one’s house with chatter and celebration. what better excuse to indulge on a large quantity of delicacies than on a holiday? Also, a holiday potluck will allow a large group of people to enjoy multicultural foods at the same time as relieving the hosts from making most of the food, leaving more time for hanging up mistletoes in the most unexpected spots.

Having a potluck dinner with friends is a great opportunity to see one’s pals in a fun, relaxed environment. Not only do you get to mingle with a large festive crowd, but you also get to introduce your lovey-dovey to all your friends, and meet all your honey’s friends yourself. Finally, you must already know what your significant other acts like one-on-one, but this is a great opportunity to see how he/she behaves in a large group.

Being hosts of the party with your significant other is also very romantic. Arranging an event with your significant other not only shows organizational skills, but it is also a good way to work on a fun project together, and then enjoy the fruits of your labour in each other’s company. Before the holiday potluck party starts, you can spend alone time with your partner decorating the rooms and lighting the candles together. Watch out, there will be mistletoe!

There’s a time when every couple needs to host a party, and a potluck party is easy to set up and fun to hold. The winter holidays are a great opportunity to distract everyone from the yucky snow outside with a fun party inside. Get closer with your loved ones, wear that horrible sweater your aunt got you last year, decorate your house, and beware of the smooch-inducing mistletoe.

A Romantic Journey Back in Time

    December 19th, 2008

When it comes to dating, many wish they could go back in time, perhaps to fix their mistakes or to stop themselves from blurting out some autobiographical detail that should not be revealed until at least the tenth date. Luckily, there is a place where you can do just that – go back in time on a date, that is. The place is Medieval Times, and while you can’t reverse your regrets, you can expect an exciting and romantic rendezvous.

Medieval Times offers a variety of fun experiences. You can watch the adorable trained animals perform elegant tricks, and watch the (equally adorable) knights joust. You can feed your appetite with the excellent food (and your bare hands), and feed your ego with being called “Lord” or “Lady” the entire evening.

The servers, or “wenches”, are polite and attentive, and the candlelit dinner is made more romantic by the love story entwined in the main plot of the show. Whether you fall for its romance or its comedy, though, the show successfully entertains with its engaging plot, rich costumes, and superb special effects.

If you are celebrating your anniversary or birthday at Medieval Times, you can have the performers announce it. But Medieval Times is a fun date any time! And if you’re looking for even more romance, its proximity to Lake Ontario provides the perfect opportunity for a late-night stroll.

WHERE: 10 Dufferin St., Exhibition Place.

    APPROXIMATE CO$T FOR TWO: $145
