Have a Spectacular Valentine’s Day!

Although it is true that one can make any day special for their sweetheart, the approach of Valentine’s Day just holds so much excitement! Here are some tips to make this Valentine’s day (or any day, that is) memorable:

Surprise your other half. Plan something thoughtful, whether it’s a romantic fantasy they’ve mentioned, or simply something spontaneous. An evening full of romance, out or in, or a getaway weekend for two are just some examples.
Do something out of the ordinary. If the two of you are used to a routine, break out of it. Try pampering each other. Giving each other massages with oil or feeding each other fruit dipped in chocolate are just some ideas.
Let your significant other know they’re appreciated. One can do this by writing a meaningful card or letter for their mate. (To add a surprise effect, place the love note somewhere they are guaranteed to look, and have them find it. It makes the gesture even more sweet.)

Remember that gifts on Valentine’s Day are not necessary to show your love for another. However, if one or the two of you feel like giving gifts, remember that presents don’t have to be expensive to be heartfelt. A simple box of chocolates often suffices; something home-made or something thoughtful are also good options.

Toronto’s 2010 Wintercity Festival!

From January 29 to February 11, 2010, Toronto will once again be holding it’s Wintercity Festival. Drop by Nathan Phillips Square and discover Toronto’s art scene filled with food and free entrtainment.

cirque du soleil – ovo

Cirque du Soleil’s recent show, OVO, performs at the Portlands on Cherry street (just south of the gardiner towards the water. You’ll see the signs). At first, I forgot about the importance of circus clowns and that the beginning is typically filled with them prior to the main acts. My impression was that this was going to be a kids show and that there won’t be any big stunts by the way the show started, but that was quickly changed as the Chinese acrobats came out.

In total, there were about 5 main acts supporting the trampoline, acrobatics, balancing and high towers. All of the acts were very well done with no mistakes or near-accidents. I’ve been told though, that this is still a smaller production than las vegas, in case you’ve been to another show and could compare.

The venue itself is very nice, standard for a circus tent, but not one that you’d think of with livestock. Because there aren’t any animals, the tent and venue was a very plesant experience. It looks like there was about 200 people that can fit in here, and the show was packed.

If you’re planning making a trip, there is paid parking ($15) across the street which is a short walk. Pretzels are $5, popcorn is $5.50 and soda pop is $3. Lots of nice souveniers are available all around with a good selection of items.

Overall, I enjoyed the show. The great Toronto weather played a big part to enjoying the event as you walk to your car. This was my first cirque event and I’d go again, but at a bigger production to see larger installments.

nice day out at yonge and dundas square!

Before OVO, we decided to take a walk around Yonge Dundas square to enjoy the warm weather. If you’ve not been out yet, we really encourage you to make the trip out. It feels like it’s about 15 out there today and with all the walking, probably warmer.

At the square, there are live performers playing right now to a modest sized crowd. Songs range from pop, rock and reggae . Pretty diverse group playing that’s for sure.
Lots of sales going on too, specifically at the Guess store across the street. My bebe looks like she wants to buy something because she’s signalling to me about something.

Gotta go see what’s up, if you’re planing making the trip downtown, don’t take Yonge street because there’s construction.

Sneak out for Nuit Blanch!

For the few years that Nuit Blanche has been playing, I’ve yet to actually attend one of these. The above video shows just one of the highlights of the show with a blinking Toronto City Hall on display on the wee hours of the night. It’s certainly one of the many different attractions at the event, enough for you to plan that all-nighter. Remember those nights when you snuck out of your parent’s house to hang out with your friends? Do it again at Nuit Blanche 2009!

Horse back riding or Go Karts along the Niagara Escarpment

There’s a place in Niagara called HorsePlay Niagara which has Horseback riding, Trail riding and off-road go karting for those looking for a weekend adventure. Settled in on the Niagara escarpment, this is the only place that offers horse back riding for ages 6 and up, trails on the beach. Trails are authentically planned over a 300 acre property in the wilderness, unlike some of the field tracks that looks like every other beaten path. My girlfriend and I have been thinking about doing something like this and from what i’ve been looking for on the Internet thus far, this one looks to have the most amount value.
