How to Buy Tickets
By Jonathan Rotsztain
During the past few months, I’ve shouted at you, letting y’all know what shows to see, where, and when. Over the weekend, the thought dawned on me that perhaps my particular- and oft peculiar- taste is not exactly in sync with LoveInToronto.com’s general readership, nor should it be. Music is the universal language, but it is also deeply personal and highly individual. With that logic in mind, I present to you my primer on how to find out about shows and buy tickets for anything and everything that our multicultural, cosmopolitan metropolis has to offer.

Control – the rise of Joy Division
Is your singing voice a different octave than your speaking voice? Perhaps you are ‘Bass Baritone’? I’m not sure but I think Paul Potts is a Bass Baritone. What exactly is a BASS BARITONE VOICE? Ian Curtis, the lead singer of Joy Division had a Bass Baritone voice. That is to say his singing voice shared certain qualities of both the baritone and the bass. You can really hear those qualities in the hit song: Love will tear us apart, again.
Twelve Girls Band
By Jonathan Rotsztain
Hailing from the People’s Republic of China, the Twelve Girls Band can only be described as a real treat. This unique act will be at the Sony Centre for the Performing Arts this Friday October 26. Bridging the ever-narrower divide between the Occident and the Orient through the power of song, the neatly named ensemble are best known for their haunting takes on American pop classics like Céline Dion’s My Heart Will Go On and Irving Berlin’s White Christmas mixed with classic Chinese fare and flare. Playing traditional Chinese instruments like the guzheng, the yangqin, the pipa, the erhu and flutes, the Girls are going places. Continue reading
Justice, Zombies and Porn
By Jonathan Rotsztain
Please go on a date with me. I would like you to take me out to dinner and treat me nice. Our hands might brush up against each other’s as we take a relaxing walk and we’ll get lost in each other’s eyes. The conversation will be pleasant and the tension palpable. We’ll exchange fitness tips and ex horror stories. We’ll talk about our feelings and I’ll be a good and attentive listener, offering you advice and most of all support and comfort. Then, maybe, we’ll make-out, just a little bit. But really, if you’re planning on showing me a good time this weekend you’ll need the following three things: Justice, Porn and Zombies.
God Made Me Funky and the New Groove Orchestra
By Jonathan Rotsztain
This Friday October 12 a special event comes to Revival Nightclub (783 College St.): namely the God Made Me Funky Toga Party.
First a little bit about God Made Me etc. Hailing from our very own Love in Toronto, this 10-member Nu Funk ensemble has assembled to share their twangy blend of funk, soul, hip-hop and R&B for over a decade. Including a former member of Len (cf. You Steal My Sunshine) and of Snow’s entourage (cf. Informer), God Made etc. has energy, charisma and a titular track all about how God Made them Funky. With a solid track record, including a NNNN review from NOW Magazine, the hard working God etc. are poised to make it big with airplay on CBC Radio 3, an appearance in the 18th direct-to-video American Pie film (I think this one’s called Stiffler’s Funeral) and a video in rotation on bubblegum station MuchMusic. If you like Nu Funk or are unsure of what to expect, check out God Made Me Funky for a satisfying live show that’s the perfect ambience for a first date or beyond.
Randomland at Circa
By Jonathan Rotsztain
Normally, I wouldn’t recommend you going anywhere near Richmond Street on a weekend night. Clubland – the annoying, expensive and often violent area between University and Bathurst and Queen and King – is home to such infamous mainstays as Inside Lounge, Century Room, Steam Nightclub, etc, etc, ad nauseam which provide generic entertainment to Toronto’s masses (most of whom actually live in the 905). Trash talk aside, Clubland is entering a new era of entertainment with the opening of Randomland at Circa. Continue reading
Papa Was A Rolling Stone
By Jonathan Rotsztain
It was the third of September.
That day I’ll always remember, yes I will.
‘Cause that was the day that my daddy died.
I never got a chance to see him.
Never heard nothing but bad things about him.
Mama, I’m depending on you to tell me the truth.
-The Temptations
Big Mama’s in the house and boy – do I have a truth-filled supper cooked up for you. It’s mid-September and Toronto is alive with opportunity as live music extraordinaire will delight, entertain, educated and provide the perfect opportunity to see and be the scene, hunt and chase, kiss and love. Here’s your Temptation filled line-up and low-down for the feast of a lifetime this weekend. Listen to your mother:
Labour of Love 2007
It’s the Labour Day long weekend. Time to let loose, party and find love. For the summer’s last hurrah I suggest taking in the all night dance party that will knock your socks off and your condoms on: Labour of Love. Featuring internationally renowned DJs Armin Van Buuren, MSTRKRFT, Mark Oliver, Danny Tanaglia and many, oh so many more, the event converges on the Guvernment and the Kool Haus just in time, as the season turns, school begins and everything falls a little closer to commitment, responsibility and winter.
Fake Prom 2007: An Enchanted Evening
Prom. Clichés include: the end of an era, a celebration of what has been, a look to the future, a last chance for romance, a big fucking party and of course, finding prom clichéd. Whether yours was the night that you got stood up with the limo, did it for the first time or somewhere in between, memories of your actual year-end formal high school dance are likely bittersweet.
Synesthesia: A Benefit for Childhood Cancer Foundation
Candlelighters Canada – The Childhood Cancer Foundation presents Synesthesia, a unqiue benefit concert supporting childhood cancer research this Wednesday August 15th at the Drake Hotel at 8pm. Synesthesia is Greek for to come together. It is a condition in which one type of stimulation evokes the sensation of another, as when the hearing of a sound produces the visualization of a color.
