hey there, honey

It can be frustrating in a new relationship than adapting and learning different cultures. But like in ALL aspects of life (that’s right, ALL), food can win over the coldest of hearts.

unloved in toronto.

So I was thinking. What am I doing writing for this Love in Toronto blog, whereas I, Laurie, am not?

Am I really cooking up all of these delicious things and the boys are flocking to my door? In mass amounts? Do you picture me swatting them off?

Well, as surprising as it might seem, I’m not.

Alas, I am single. Single and presumably ‘unloved in Toronto’.

The guys, the girls… The grill.

So, you and “Deb” have been dating for a bit now, but she hasn’t really met your buddies. You suggest a backyard BBQ – she can invite a couple girlfriends, you can invite a couple of the guys – and perhaps potential love connections will ensue.

Or not, but you still have to eat delicious food.

Impress everyone with your culinary expertise by serving up something different than your basic dogs and ‘burgs. Ask them to bring side dishes, desserts, and snacks, and fire up the grill with these four deviations from the norm:
Pad Thai Chicken Burgers
1/3 lb. ground chicken

i love my garden as much as you love your boyfriend

I do. I really do. I get a rush of excitement, my cheeks flush, and my heart beats fast when I step towards my rows of glorious produce.IMG 0156

By ‘garden’, I mean one kind: the kind filled with vegetables. (Except for my lovely sunflowers (that’s one on the left!)… Otherwise I tend to kill them all.)

So when ‘Bobby’ and I are hanging out at my place, do I mention the ‘other love’ of my life? Never. We need not cause unwanted jealously. But realistically, ‘Bobby’ doesn’t have my heart like my artichokes and jalapenos do.

August is the time of year when your garden over produces. I mean, this morning I picked seven thousand peppers, eighty-two tomatoes, and zucchini as long as my tibia.

“Um… I forgot to mention…”

You roll over and smile at “Jenn”. A great girl, friend of a friend; hung out with you and your crew the night before.

Not seemingly a one-nighter; Jenn is pretty great. This could go somewhere… Or it couldn’t, you think. But you know you didn’t want to mess up the ‘morning after’.

“Forgot to mention?” You repeat.

“I’ve a daughter.” She hesitates as you digest the information. “And she spends the week with her father… And she is due any minute for our weekend together.”

There’s no animosity (after all, you met her the night before), but instead, sheer panic.

“No problem,” you recover. “I love kids! We can make a great brunch together.”

Jenn smiles, thinks your a gem, and the doorbell rings.

no money? no problem. frugal menus for that frugal date.

So after weeks of wooing “Lance”, that new guy in cubicle seven, (approximately 9 2/3 ft. away from your lovely corner desk), you finally decide that the flirtatious encounters, drinks after work, and shared lunch breaks isn’t enough.

You ask him over for dinner. “Reach the heart through the stomach”, right?

Here’s the deal: It has to have a little romance, make him think you’re incredible, and, well, hardly cost you a cent. Your 9-5 hardly can cover an expensive night of entertaining. But this time, spaghetti with ice cream for dessert just won’t cut it.

Check your pantry; odds are, you already have some of the staples for this dinner:

Get satisfied more than once tonight with this pre-assembled treat

Post-date scenario:

You’re back at your place, canoodling of sorts have ensued, it’s later that evening (read: quite early in the AM), and you’re getting the post-alcohol / many calories recently burned in fervent activity munchies.

To top it off, it’s still this sweltering heat.

Pre-date scenario:

Hmm, you think to yourself. Wouldn’t it be nice if I had a delicious snack sitting in the freezer for us tonight? (I’m quite certain this is exactly what would cross your mind. It is now, right? RIGHT?)

Well, it’s a grand thing I’m here to fill your belly with delicious ideas. Pre-plan with making homemade ice cream sandwiches. Easy-peasy, with a lot of variations, nothing will satisfy you more before romp number two.
