The Dyke does the Village Rainbow

Rating: (¼ Flags)

Well folks you got to love old standbys and places that seem to have been there forever. The Village Rainbow has been that for me. It is a great place to stop by for beer and wings and a wonderful place grab a very large plate of poutine. They also have a great Eggs Benedict and an all day breakfast. However I thought I’d take myself down to the Rainbow for an official experience.

Looking for a quick breakfast to fit into a busy day, my partner Kara and I headed down to Church and Carlton to Daybreak. With a proud rooster as their logo it seems supremely appropriate for Daybreak to be known as the great breakfast nook located across from Zippers. Once inside the homey, sunrise-coloured restaurant, we were ushered to a large pine table that gave the feeling we were tucking in for a meal in a big kitchen. Since I’ve already enjoyed their satisfying all-day-breakfasts, I set my sights on something different.

Toronto is a city full of treasures just waiting to be found. Places that would only reveal themselves to you at ground level while winding your way down a busy street packed with a thousand narrow restaurants and business, blending into a mosaic of opportunities waiting to be experienced. When on a lunch break a friend of mine and I strode into The Tokyo Grill on Yonge. It however did not seem to be that kind of treasure. In Toronto there are also run down, neglected and dirty places that one can discover just as easily. On first impression my friend and I agreed that The Tokyo Grill felt like a hole in the wall, with a very large pride flag flapping above it.

Now let’s get one thing straight: I am a Torontonian, and I love what the city has to offer, but sometimes a girl just needs to get out. Last week I found myself not only out of town but at a Queer-friendly establishment named Willow Pond Country B&B. Not even an hour from our fair city, this was a huge slice of country charm that I enjoyed immensely. The occasion was a wedding, and for this event the location was ideal. Not only are they proud to accept guests of all orientations, but this is where the first gay marriage in Durham County was performed. Innkeepers Lynn and Randy Morrison were a delightful couple, welcoming and very quick to proclaim the queer friendliness of their home.

I love those days when you feel like you’ve made a new discovery; found a new favorite part of town filled with exciting things to do and places to go. Having moved to the east end of the city my dining adventures took me to Broadview and Danforth. The first thing I was greeted by was a P-Flagged store and hair salon called "Wash Up & Brush Co!" It was a funky little place kind of like "Outer Layer" with hair styling in the back. Perfect place to primp and puff before a date! To her chagrin I caught the owner Susan with a colour rinse in and we chatted away about the neighbourhood. A few of her customers have pegged the area "the new gay suburb" or the place where queer folk move when they are tired of the village.

Strolling once again in Cabbagetown my partner and I came across a charming looking Butcher shop called St. Jamestown Steak & Chops with a Delicatessen next door. Sources from Toronto Life said this small-scale wonder has been in operation since 1971 and I was told that it now belongs to the son of the previous owner. Wandering through the shop our eyes were treated to the sight of fresh and colourful vegetables, cheese, stacks of dry goods and some excellent looking cuts of organic meat. It was enough to make you want to have a B.B.Q.

To put this review into perspective I am a theatre student, a theatre lover, a musical lover and I have seen my fair share of shows in Toronto that have blown my mind. But as I entered The SpiegelTent’nTavern at The Harbourfront Centre, I felt like I had entered a time machine. The wooden cabaret tent (built in Belgium in the 1920s) with a velvet canopy ceiling and muted light through the stained glass windows must have had something to do with it! However it was not just the physical appearance of the theatre that made it a nostalgic experience.
